FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 2, 2026
BROWNSVILLE, Texas (March 2, 2026) — Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport (BRO) proudly hosted the official arrival celebration for Alex Fernández, Mr. Amigo 2026, in partnership with the Mr. Amigo Association of Brownsville on February 25, 2026 as part of the annual Charro Days Fiesta.
The Mr. Amigo honor is one of the most recognized distinctions associated with Charro Days, awarded annually to a distinguished Mexican citizen whose leadership, service, and cultural influence reflect the values at the heart of the celebration and its deep ties to Mexican heritage. The tradition celebrates friendship, cultural pride, and cross-border unity between the United States and Mexico.
Alex Fernández is a prominent performer of Mexican regional music and a member of the renowned Fernández musical family. He is the grandson of legendary ranchero singer Vicente Fernández and the son of internationally acclaimed artist Alejandro Fernández. Through his own musical career, Fernández continues the family legacy by honoring traditional Mexican music while connecting with new generations and celebrating cultural identity.
The Fernández family holds a special place in Charro Days history. Vicente Fernández was named Mr. Amigo in 1977, and Vicente Fernández Jr., Alex’s uncle, received the honor in 2009, making Alex Fernández the third member of his family to be selected for this distinguished title.
As the 2026 Mr. Amigo, Fernández served as an ambassador for Charro Days, participating in community events and official festivities throughout the celebration. His arrival marked a highlight of this year’s Charro Days celebration and reinforced the enduring friendship between the United States and Mexico that defines the region.
“As the gateway to our city, BRO was honored to welcome Mr. Amigo 2026 and to help celebrate a tradition that represents the heart of our binational community,” said Faisal Khalifa, Interim Airport Director. “We are grateful to have played a role in welcoming Alex Fernández during one of our community’s most meaningful traditions.”
